Everyone else built for the front desk
We started at the other end. Everything below follows from that one decision.
The owner signs the cheque
So gym software gets built for the owner. There’s nothing sinister in that — the buyer is who a product has to please, and every company in this market has done the same thing.
The member gets whatever’s left
Usually a timetable with a login.
We built backwards from the member
That reads like a slogan until you look at what it forced us to build. Four things came out of it, and you can check every one against the software.
A companion, not a booking screen
Most member apps are a schedule with a booking button on top. Members download one, book a class, and forget it exists. Ours gets opened daily — it reads a meal from a photo of it, writes the week’s programme, and picks up when someone goes quiet.
The AI is on both sides
Everyone building AI for gyms is pointing it at the front desk. An assistant for the owner. Useful, and only half the building — your members get one as well, and no competitor has done that.
Retention is the product
Most platforms tell you who cancelled. By then they’ve been gone for weeks. Nobody quits a gym in one decision — they come in less, then less, then not at all. That fade is the thing we built for.
We don’t tax your growth
No commission on your members’ payments. Some of that is principle. Most of it is that we never built a business which needed to sit between a gym and its members’ money, and the platforms that did can’t stop now — the percentage is the business.
You’re the one who knows their names
We’re not going to tell you we care about your members more than you do. What we’ll say is that we designed for them first, and that it shows up in the product. Go and look. It’s in the software or it isn’t.
Who we are
PATO is built by NEZIAK, a human-centred design studio in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Starting from the person who actually uses the thing is what the studio does on every project. It isn’t a line we wrote for this page. We train as well, so the test we keep coming back to isn’t engagement or retention or any of the other words on this site. It’s whether someone got back in the gym.
It started as an app one of us built for his wife.
We’re not the biggest platform in this market and we don’t have a decade of logos. There are things the incumbents do that we don’t yet, and they’re listed on /compare.
Try it for two weeks. Decide after that.
